This Sets Students Up to Fail in Math

Putting a student in the wrong math class doesn’t make them more advanced. It doesn’t make them smarter.

It just makes them crash and burn. They might wanna be an engineer, and then they get thrown into a math class that’s just way above where they are currently.

Maybe just ‘cause they were never held accountable for learning the prerequisite material.

And then they crash and burn and come out thinking “I’m not cut out for engineering” when really they very well may be, and a placement exam would have identified like, listen, kid we need you here, and here’s where you are, and here’s all the skills that you gotta fill in.

Which might look daunting at first, but if you start the student in the right place, then they can start making progress, and progress produces motivation.
