The most hard-hitting two sentences in all of talent development research is this: deliberate practice requires effort and is not inherently enjoyable. Individuals are motivated to practice because practice improves performance.

That’s according to K. Anders Ericsson, one of the most influential researchers in the field of human development and expertise.

In other words: Maximal learning does not happen naturally as a result of maximizing other things like enjoyment, comfort, convenience, ease of practice. In fact, maximal learning is at odds with a lot of these things.
