Math Education is a War Zone

Once you get away from “I can empirically test this right now, right in front of me, like I can test that 2x3=6,” it’s tough to keep arguments productive.

They often spiral into disagreement about assumptions: who interprets what to mean what, who has what preconceptions.

Funny enough, one of the reasons I went into math was to avoid these sorts of arguments… little did I know that math education is a philosophical and political warzone 🙃

Seems like it doesn’t matter what you start with – once you append “education” or “policy” or any kind of descriptor that implies managing the experiences of other people, you get a warzone.

Math? 🌈🦋🦄

Math education? 💣💥

Math education policy? 💀
