If you want to identify the best possible training methods, then this is the question you need to start with:

How would you teach/learn if your life depended on it?

As Jason describes: “Imagine you’re the tutor for this bloodthirsty king’s kids. He really cares a lot about their education, and he’s already executed the previous two tutors.

You’re the new tutor and you know that after the session’s done, the king might quiz his kids on the thing they said they learned. And if he’s unimpressed, he’s gonna have your head taken off.

Okay, so if you’re in that situation, how would you teach? If your ass is on the line, your life is on the line, how are you going to do this thing?”

That’s the litmus test for optimal teaching/learning methods: they will be conserved even in the theoretical highest-stakes scenario.

What would you do if your life depended on it?

If you’re not doing that already, then you’re not doing your best.
